The Perron cheese factory at the end of the 19th century
Founded in 1895 by Adélard Perron, the old Perron cheese factory was built according to the government standards of its time. It was part of a vast network of artisanal cheese factories that shaped the rural landscape of Quebec. In 1897, there were more than 1,266 of them across the province.
Today, it is the last authentic representative of these old-fashioned cheese dairies still standing. Faithful to its original architecture and period atmosphere, it eloquently testifies to the traditional know-how and economic importance of the cheese industry in rural communities at the end of the 19th century.
Thanks to its unique character and exceptional historical value, the cheese factory was designated an exceptional historical monument in October 1989 by the Quebec Ministry of Culture. This official recognition confirms its essential role in preserving collective memory and Quebec's agri-food heritage.
